OVERVIEW
Food is essential to our well-being and for some of us, eating is more than just a way to stave off hunger. It’s a hobby. So when it came to choosing my 1st project for the Google UX Design Certificate, I had to jump on this one.
This case study describes my process of creating a food delivery app from concept to the final design.
SUMMARY
Hungry Bee is a food delivery company. It offer a wide spectrum of competitive pricing. Hungry Bee targets customers who lack the time or ability to prepare a meals. Hungry Bee provides information, menus and user-reviews of food delivery options from partner restaurants in select cities.
MY ROLE
Independent UX Designer
RESPONSIBILITIES
Conducting interviews, paper and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, and iterating on designs.
PROJECT DURATION
8 Weeks
TOOLS USED
Figma & Microsoft Office Suite.
PROCESS
THE CHALLENGES
Busy office employer and commuters lack the time necessary to prepare a meal.
Busy women like housewives avoid lineups and not deal with over-conversational staff members.
THE GOAL
Design an app for food delivery that allows users to easily and quickly order and pick up fresh, healthy dishes.
USER RESEARCH SUMMARY
I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research was working adults who don’t have time to cook meals.
This user group confirmed initial assumptions about “Hungry Bee” App Users, but research also revealed that time was not the only factor limiting users from cooking at home. Other user problems included obligations, interests, or challenges that make it difficult to get groceries for cooking or go to restaurants in-person.
PERSONA
Based on the information gotten from the foundational research, I created a persona whose demographics, motivations, goals and frustrations represent the needs of the users.
USER JOURNEY MAP
Mapping Sushmita’s user journey revealed areas where we can make improvements in his journey for a better user experience.
GOAL STATEMENT
Now we know the exact problems faced by our users. So, what next?
A goal statement was created to ensure a problem-solution fit.
USER FLOW
After discovering more about the typical food delivery app user, i put together a user flow to visualize their steps and thought process.
Focuses on the user experience
Focuses on the product
WIREFRAMING
As the initial design phase continued, I made sure to base screen designs on feedback and findings from the user research.
LOW FIDELITY PROTOTYPE
Using the completed set of digital wireframes, I created a low fidelity prototype. The primary
user flow I connected was ordering food items successfully, so the prototype could be used in a usability study.
USABILITY STUDY: FINDINGS
To get an early insight into the app’s usability before the introduction of visual elements, I recruited 5 participants to test the low-fidelity prototype.
By watching the participants interact with the app and hearing their thoughts, I was able to identify problem areas in the app’s design
Early designs allowed for some customization, but after the first usability study, I added additional Sign-in Later button to avoid sign-in at startup
The second usability study revealed frustration about notification message. To smooth this flow, I add a notification message when tapping ADD TO CART button.
My hi-fidelity prototype followed the same user flow as the low-fidelity prototype, and included the design changes made after the usability study.
Takeaways
This was my first UX case study, and it was a fantastic learning experience. Along the process, I made a lot of mistakes and learned a lot from them. Though I am satisfied with my final product there are a few areas I’d like to work on in the future-
More user interviews would aid in the discovery of new problems to tackle, therefore improving the app’s overall performance.
Adding interesting visuals and animations to the app would help keep the users engaged.
Thank you for reaching the end of this case study🤗.
